DEJI OSHILAJA AND HAJRAH MAHMOOD TAKE PART IN RACISM WORKSHOP

17 April 2024

BURTON Albion men and women's first-team stars Deji Oshilaja and Hajrah Mahmood recently took part in a 'Show Racism The Red Card' workshop with students from local primary schools.

The two were quizzed on the tough subject of racism and discrimination by students from local primary schools William Shrewsbury and John of Rolleston.

After the Q&A, the players joined in a group activity, before taking time to pose for selfies and sign autographs for the youngsters.

Men's first-team midfielder Deji Oshilaja said: “It has been a fantastic session, and I'm happy to have contributed towards the event. There were some really good, challenging questions there, and I hope the children have learned a lot about racism and hate crimes.”

Women's player Hajrah Mahmood added: “It was a wonderful experience to be able to be part of this workshop and to be able to share my personal experiences and thoughts on this topic. The children asked some thought-provoking questions about racism during this session. I hope this workshop was very beneficial to the children”.

School Sport Co-ordinator Louisa Abbey said: “Everyone participating had an amazing day. Every child gained knowledge from the sessions, and it was wonderful to observe their interactions with the players who attended and contributed to the day."

Show Racism the Red Card campaign worker Seth Ejukwu said: “We thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with Burton Albion FC and the Burton Albion Community Trust on our recent educational event.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to create an environment for young people to learn about crucial topics such as racism and hate crime, fostering an understanding of how stereotypes can influence judgments.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the club, the participating schools, and the players who joined us. We look forward to building upon this partnership, continuing to educate the next generation, and making a positive impact together.”
