MANAGER'S VERDICT: CHELTENHAM

16 April 2024

MARTIN Paterson was disappointed with a second half performance that saw the Brewers slip to a 2-1 home defeat against Cheltenham.

Albion had taken the lead before the interval through Steve Seddon but the visitors came back strongly to take all three points.

Paterson said: “We didn’t come out for the second half at all.

“They started the game a bit brighter than us but after 20 minutes we started working some forward passes. Then we looked dangerous, got a goal and came in at half-time with everything in our hands.

“But we didn’t come out in the second half and conceded from two set plays with people not doing their jobs – it was as simple as that.

“We are suffering at the moment injury wise as well and we had to make multiple changes yet again. That’s something we just have to deal with.

“But we struggled to get territory and that’s something we have to look at.

“It was a relegation battle between two teams at the bottom end of the table. You have to find a way to win, and they did through two set plays. That was the game.

“We have to be better and get over the line.

“I can talk all day long about what has gone wrong but what we need to do now is get this group ready for Saturday. That’s the most important thing.

“We will go back; we will debrief tonight but we have to prepare for Reading.

“We have come off the back of a really good performance against Stevenage so if the drop off can go one way it can go the other way and that’s what we need to do.

“The players have to brush themselves down, take the hard truths and get ready for Saturday.”
